Missionary who served in Asia and the Americas dies at Techny

Father Jesus Briones SVD, 74, a missionary in Argentina, the Philippines and the United States, died on Oct. 19 at Techny.

Born in Tarlac, Philippines, in 1951, Jesus Briones was the son of Lusencia (nee Escalona) and Benigno Briones. As a youth, he entered the Society of the Divine Word in Quezon City, Philippines, in 1963.

In 1971, he professed vows in Quezon City and was ordained to the priesthood in Tagaytay City, Philippines in 1976.
 
For his first assigned, superiors sent him to Mindoro, Philippines, where he served until a transfer to Argentina East Province in 1987. While in Argentina, he served in the Puerto Rico District. Puerto Rico is the capital city of Libertador General San Martín in Misiones Province in northeastern Argentina.
 
In 2001, he was sent to the Argentina South Province, where served in ministries in Aris del Valle and Buenos Aires. He also held administrative roles, including that of superior delegate.
 
In 2006, Father Briones moved to the Chicago Province to fulfill pastoral needs in St. Anthony of Padua in Hightstown, N.J., and St. Anthony Claret in Lakewood, N.J. In 2010, he became pastor of St. Patrick in Fort Wayne, Ind.
 
In 2012, Father Briones was transferred to the Western Province, where he served Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. George parishes in Ontario, Calif. He became a resident of the Divine Word Residence in Riverside, Calif., in 2016 and was transferred to the Divine Word Resident at Techny in retirement.
 
Father Briones’s funeral Mass will take place on Oct. 24 in Wendelin Hall at Techny.
