Divine Word Theologate
Before being ordained, a seminarian generally completes at least four years of theological and pastoral studies and lives in community at the Theologate. In the Chicago Province of the Society of the Divine Word, candidates for the priesthood take courses at Catholic Theological Union (CTU) while brother candidates complete their education and formation prior to perpetual vows.
During the time at CTU, seminarians prepare themselves for their later ministries as priests. This basic formation fulfills the theological and pastoral studies that canon law requires in order for a man to be ordained to the priesthood. The theological studies include various courses on theology, Scripture, liturgy, missiology, morality, pastoral ministry, culture and anthropology.
During these theological studies, a seminarian has an opportunity to experience one year of pastoral work in a parish or other ministry or two to three years of cross-cultural training in a country other than his own.
