Church of Reconciliation
Portman, Jamaica

Located in Portman’s Bridgeport community, Church of Reconciliation is a living sign of the passage in St. John’s Gospel that prays "that they all be one." A unique example of Christian unity, Church of Reconciliation is the spiritual home of two faith communities—one Roman Catholic and the other Anglican.

Most Rev. Samuel E. Carter, S.J., archbishop of Kingston, and Right Rev. Herbert D. Edmondson, Anglican bishop of Jamaica, officially dedicated the church in 1977. For more than 30 years, the two congregations have shared the same worship space and have engaged in joint spiritual, pastoral, social and fundraising activities.

Portman, which has a population of roughly 300,000, is a dormitory town to the island’s capital. Situated west of Kingston, Portman consists of several housing communities, which are home to many in Kingston’s workforce who commute daily.

The Divine Word Missionaries have served Church of Reconciliation since 2005. The missionaries who tend to this church also care for Good Shepherd. Good Shepherd is located in Portman’s Braeton community.

Our Lady of the Assumption
Morant Bay, Jamaica

A vibrant parish, Our Lady of the Assumption is the center of much spiritual and social outreach that helps to improve the lives of the economically disenfranchised in the civil parish of St. Thomas in southeastern Jamaica.

In addition to administrative and pastoral duties at Our Lady of the Assumption, the Divine Word Missionaries care for two other Catholic communities: St. Bartholomew in Yallahs and St. Francis of Assisi in Port Morant. Yallahs is located in the western part of St. Thomas while Port Morant lies in the eastern part.

Through parish programs, more than 2,500 people have received new houses, and many have benefited from a program that gives chickens to help families start small businesses.

The staff at Our Lady of the Assumption also manages food distribution for 180 churches and schools. Plus, we have organized eight Bible study groups with two groups for residents of farthest regions of southeastern Jamaica.
