A native of northwestern Portugal, Fr. José Cardoso, SVD, specializes in working with the Portuguese immigrant community.

In 1999, he became pastor of Mission Santa Cruz in Montréal. As pastor, he founded We Eat Together, a project that provides a meeting place and meals for senior citizens. He is the host of "In the Ways of the Word," a weekly radio program, and coordinates the parish’s Université des Temps Libre (University of Free Time), where as many as 20 classes per session are taught by volunteers.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1989, Fr. Cardoso also has worked as a missionary in Portugal and Benin in West Africa. He has accompanied senior citizen groups to Italy, Greece and the Holy Land. In addition to his home country of Portugal, he has studied in Ireland and Montréal.
