At Mission Santa Cruz in Montreal, SVDs work with the Portuguese community.
Fr. Jose Maria Cardoso, SVD originally from Portugal and the pastor of this
vibrant parish, fosters a sense of community here. We work to build community through liturgy, visiting families, and ministering to the sick and infirm, and the parish catechism program. The SVDs help the Portuguese immigrants feel part of a community in a place where they may otherwise experience alienation from the larger society. Immigrants often struggle with feelings of bewilderment in a new environment, but the SVDs help them find a sense of belonging. The SVDs at Mission Santa Cruz offer immigrants, especially the young, a message of hope which is often eclipsed by the consumerist messages of secular society. Mission Santa Cruz offers a refuge where young people can build a foundation on God’s enduring Word, hear the truth, and give their lives a sense of direction in a world that often seems chaotic.
