Canada District

History

We began our mission in Canada at Granby in 1948. From the start the main focus has been ministry with immigrants. Initially, we worked with Polish, Dutch and German immigrants. In 1988, we began to minister with French and Portuguese immigrants and later with the Latinos in Granby and Montréal. In 2005, we commenced our mission in Toronto with Portuguese, Italian and English immigrants.

To educate young men who were interested in becoming priests and brothers, we opened a minor seminary at Granby with 35 students in 1950. This building is now leased to a private school. Another house of formation was opened in 1988 to accommodate students preparing for French-speaking missions. It closed in 1997, but our parish ministries and outreach remain dynamic.

There are 11 Divine Word Missionaries working in the Canada District (10 priests and one brother) from six countries: Canada, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Indonesia and India. The oldest confrere was born in 1936, and the youngest in 1974.
