Spizley receives Rotary Club Award in Jamaica

The Rotary Club International of Kingston honored Brother Bernie Spitzley, SVD, with the organization’s 2009 Vocational Service Award on Monday, Oct. 12 in Jamaica.

Kingston Rotary Club President Earl Barrett presented the award to Brother Bernie in recognition of the “tremendous impact” he has made on the lives of the poor and less fortunate of Jamaica.

In ten years, Brother Bernie has overseen the construction of more than 2,500 homes for individuals who desperately need shelter. He has provided food and clothing for the needy of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Morant Bay, Jamaica. He also serves as food distribution manager for 180 churches and schools and founded two Bible-sharing programs for children on the island.

In accepting the award, Brother Bernie said, “I thank my ancestors; my family who instilled in me a strong German work ethic and for sustaining my faith; and the Society of the Divine Word, which has supported me for so many years.”
