Celebrate the holidays with music

A Renaissance Christmas

Throughout December, Public Broadcasting Stations across the country will present, “A Renaissance Christmas,” a one-hour program that features Music of the Baroque’s 2007 holiday concerts at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Techny.

From the chapel’s elaborate grill work to its three-tiered chandelier, the craftsmanship of the Divine Word Brothers will serve as a backdrop to one of Chicago’s cherished holiday traditions. Established in 1972, Music of the Baroque specializes in 18th-century music and showcases the talents of some of the Midwest’s leading musicians—some of whom also perform with the Chicago Symphony and the Lyric Opera.

They have performed in the Holy Spirit Chapel since 1979. Praised for its acoustics, the chapel has been the liturgical home for Divine Word Missionaries in the United States since 1923. Designed by architect Herman Joseph Gaul, a protégée of Adler and Sullivan, the chapel’s Romanesque style is reminiscent of the religious order’s European roots.

WTTW in Chicago will broadcast “A Renaissance Christmas” at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 11. Please check your local PBS listings to determine viewing dates and times in your area.
